Aqua Sferra Waterpark
AN ECONOMIC AND CULTURAL LANDMARK
The City of Donetsk opened the long-anticipated Aqua Sferra Waterpark on December 21, 2012, to great fanfare. At the grand opening ceremony, the mayor expressed the community’s tremendous pride at being the site of the largest waterpark in Europe. Since opening its doors, the waterpark has consistently operated at full capacity, hosting up to 550 guests every three hours, with up to 2,000 visitors per day. Throughout winter and summer, guests can enjoy a variety of slides, wave pools, whirlpools, a rest area, a restaurant and bakery. The year-round attraction has drawn residents and tourists from surrounding regions and has become major driver of economic growth in a traditionally industrial area.
“Since our opening, regular and repeat visitors to Aqua Sferra Waterpark have never failed to comment on the special feeling they get being inside the dome. It is unlike any other structure they have experienced and adds to their enjoyment of the waterpark.”

OpenAire’s retractable roof enclosure may be beautiful, but it’s also designed to be practical. Rather than using steel, which corrodes quickly and doesn’t do well in a chemical aquatic environment, the dome is constructed completely of maintenance-free aluminum, which resist moisture and chemicals.
When it’s open, the structure naturally exhausts warm air and humidity, reducing the need for mechanical dehumidification and creating energy savings of up to 27 per cent over traditional structures. When the dome is closed in colder months, the glazed design generates warming solar gain that offsets heating requirements, and saves further energy by reducing the need for artificial lighting during the day.
“The maintenance and energy efficiency benefits of the waterpark’s retractable dome have amounted to tremendous overall savings in operating and labour costs, allowing us to prioritize what’s most important: our guests.”
