The Challenge

The Landing Group of restaurants, part of Cara Operations Ltd., was preparing to develop a new location in its chain of exciting, high-quality restaurants that stretches throughout the Greater Toronto Area. Kellys Landing Restaurant, located just steps from Toronto’s Union Station at the corner of Front Street West and University Avenue, would bring the Landing Group’s signature mix of premium menu choices and relaxed, patio dining atmosphere to the heart of downtown Toronto. Cara and The Landing Group knew that they needed a design feature that would make the restaurant stand out from the crowd and bring something that had never been seen before among the Landing Group of restaurants. The Solution

OpenAire built and installed a customized, single-slope 30’ by 44’ retractable roof for Kellys Landing Restaurant, making it the first location in The Landing Group to feature a retractable roof. OpenAire’s aluminum skylight design gives Kellys Landing a dynamic, naturally lit atmosphere just like an outdoor patio that guests can enjoy year-round, regardless of the weather outside. The 44-foot length of the structure is divided into three bays of approximately 15′ with the slope of the roof divided into three panels; the bottom panel retracts under the middle panel and both the bottom and middle panels retract under the top fixed glass panel.
