North Segment Community Center
New Town, ND

Designed with the incredibly talented team at DSGW, the new North Segment Community Center will surpass the expectations of all residents.

“The North Segment Community Center will be a hub of action. The site and building is designed to house loads of activities for the North Segment Tribal Community. On the grounds visitors can enjoy a game of frisbee golf, horseshoes, play basketball, softball, volleyball, tennis, or even hit a few balls on a putting green! Inside the 2 story facility a day can be spent by pool with flowing lazy river, while taking in the sun and breeze through the retractable roof. Additional community spaces such as a craft room, lecture hall, elders kitchen, playground, gymnasium, walking track and offices including home healthcare make up the remainder of this 100,000 sf facility.

Working with the Tribe, several sustainable and wellness features have been incorporated into the design and construction of the community center. The construction will be composed mainly of ICFs (Insulated Concrete Forms), a solar field is being installed to the north of the center, the roof has Eco Star recycled shingles, and a greenhouse that will be Net-Zero. There will be a drive up area for community members to pick up food items, or receive Covid testing, the interior offices will have access to daylight via solatubes, and a separate patio is being constructed near the entrance where the action is for the community elders to visit.”

Also included is an OpenAire retractable roof that is 81 ft deep and 204 ft long. Inside it will be the indoor pool and waterpark which includes a splash pad with a tipping bucket, waterslides hot tubs and a lazy river. This enclosure will help with the various sustainable initiatives including by energy savings found from the open roof and use of daylight. In addition the all aluminum building will be corrosion free, making it low maintenance and long lasting, enhancing the tribes investment for years to come.

In addition to the waterpark enclosure OpenAire is building a greenhouse which will mimic the one being build on the grounds of United Tribes Technical College (UTTC). Providing the community with a year round facility to grow food.
