Reimagining YMCA Aquatic Spaces: A Smarter Path to Growth, Health & Sustainability featured image

This week I walked into a YMCA in my new home town to find the pool is permanently closed. What a shame! It got me thinking… YMCA leaders today are being asked to do more than ever. More programming. More community impact. More financial sustainability, with fewer resources. At the same time, aquatic facilities, often the heart of a Y, are also among the most complex and costly to operate. So the question becomes:

How can YMCAs transform aquatic spaces into higher-performing, year-round community assets, without increasing operational burden?

The Opportunity: Turning Aquatics Into a Strategic Advantage

Aquatic centres have always been a core part of the YMCA mission, supporting health, youth development, and community connection. But forward-thinking Ys are now leveraging aquatics in a new way:

  • As drivers of membership growth
  • As year-round programming hubs
  • As anchors for community engagement and partnerships

And increasingly, that transformation is being enabled through adaptive facility design.

Year-Round Access = Year-Round Impact

One of the biggest limitations facing many YMCA aquatic facilities is seasonality. Outdoor pools sit underutilized for months. Indoor pools come with high operating costs and often lack the experience today’s members expect. Retractable roof systems are changing that equation.

By creating environments that can open in good weather and close when needed, YMCAs can:

  • Extend programming across all 12 months
  • Eliminate weather-related disruptions
  • Increase accessibility for all age groups

In fact, facilities that have implemented these systems have seen significant increases in usage and revenue, with some reporting up to a 40% boost in aquatic revenue.

Driving Membership, Retention & Community Relevance

Today’s members, especially families, millennials, and Gen Z, are looking for more than just access. They want:

  • Experience-driven environments
  • Flexible, multi-use spaces
  • Natural light, fresh air, and connection to the outdoors

Retractable enclosures help YMCAs deliver exactly that.

They create a “best of both worlds” environment, indoor comfort with outdoor experience, making facilities more attractive to new members while increasing retention among existing ones.

More importantly, they enable expanded programming, from swim lessons and therapy to community events, driving both engagement and revenue.

Lower Operating Costs, Without Compromise

One of the biggest misconceptions around innovative aquatic design is that it adds complexity. In reality, the opposite can be true. Modern retractable roof systems are engineered to be:

  • Maintenance-free, using corrosion-resistant aluminum and stainless steel
  • Energy-efficient, reducing reliance on HVAC through natural ventilation
  • Durable, eliminating repainting and long-term structural upkeep

This means YMCAs can enhance their facilities without increasing maintenance burden, a critical advantage for lean operational teams. In many cases, facilities also benefit from:

  • Reduced air handling and ventilation costs
  • Lower lighting demand due to natural daylight
  • Improved overall energy performance

Healthier Environments for Healthier Communities

At their core, YMCAs exist to strengthen communities—and aquatic environments play a key role in that mission. However, traditional indoor pools often struggle with:

  • Poor air quality
  • High humidity
  • Chemical buildup (chloramines)

Retractable systems introduce natural airflow, creating a healthier environment for:

  • Swimmers
  • Staff
  • Youth programming participants

By improving air quality and increasing exposure to natural light, these environments support both physical and mental well-being, especially important for children and families.

Sustainability That Supports the Mission

Sustainability is no longer optional—it’s expected. For YMCAs, it’s also deeply aligned with mission. Retractable aquatic environments contribute by:

  • Reducing energy consumption through passive design
  • Leveraging solar gain for natural heating
  • Supporting green building standards like LEED

They allow facilities to do more with less, lowering operating costs while reducing environmental impact. There are no hidden pockets in walls and attics, a retractable roof building lays it all out there. No hidden mold and rot so maintenance is easier!

A Platform for Growth

Perhaps the most important takeaway for YMCA leaders is this: Aquatic facilities don’t have to be cost centres.

With the right design strategy, they can become:

  • Revenue generators
  • Membership drivers
  • Community hubs

By enabling year-round use, increasing programming flexibility, and improving the member experience, these spaces become central to both financial sustainability and mission delivery.

Looking Ahead

YMCA leaders are navigating a rapidly changing landscape.

The organizations that will thrive are those willing to rethink not just programming—but the spaces that support it.

The opportunity is clear:

Design aquatic environments that work harder for your members, your staff, and your mission.
