Power Plant Live!
Baltimore, MD
The Challenge
Developed by the Cordish Companies, one of the largest and most respected developers in the world, Power Plant Live! is Baltimore’s premiere entertainment complex, hosting over four million visitors a year. The plaza outside the existing venue is already the site of free weekly outdoor summer concerts and Baltimore Ravens events. Cordish developers were looking to construct an enclosure to cover a new outdoor stage for year-round concerts that would protect performers and audiences from the elements so outdoor performances can be enjoyed no matter what the weather.
In addition, Cordish developers had a vision for the Beer Hall to occupy aglass pavilion that would open up into a lush, festive outdoor beer garden. With nearly 40 specialty brews in a stunning setting, the venue would fast become the meeting place for downtown Baltimore.
The Solution
In 2011, OpenAire designer, manufacturer and installed two innovative enclosures for Power Plant Live!
Power Plant LIVE! Alley Canopy Roof – Opened May, 2011
Built between two existing buildings to cover the stage, OpenAire’s innovative Alley Roof canopy covers a new outdoor stage for year-round concerts, and is built to protect performers and audiences from the elements so outdoor performances can be enjoyed no matter what the weather.
The canopy covers an actual small street, creating an open yet intimate outdoor venue that’s great for seeing anything from a small regional act to big-name bands. Supported by several 20’ tall steel support columns spaced 25’ apart, the 1” thick polycarbonate roof is 151’ (46m) long x 37’ (11m) wide, and narrows to 23’ to cover the 14’ x 37’ stage set at one end of the structure. Truss rafters and the surrounding circa 1900 brick buildings give the area an elegant Victorian atmosphere.
